Arsene Wenger gives honest reply when asked about this Arsenal transfer target
Arsene Wenger denies that Arsenal are close to signing Shkodran Mustafi from Valencia
Arsene Wenger has bluntly denied that Arsenal are close to completing a deal to sign Shkodran Mustafi from Valencia in the summer transfer window.
The Gunners are thought to be on the lookout for defensive reinforcements this summer as Wenger looks to strengthen his rearguard options at The Emirates following Per Mertesacker’s serious knee injury.
Germany international Mustafi has been touted as a possible target for the north London side as Wenger searches for a new defender in the transfer market.
However, the Frenchman was giving nothing away when quizzed about the speculation linking Arsenal with a bid to sign the German immediately after the Gunners’ 3-1 pre-season friendly win over Chivas on Sunday night.
Asked whether Arsenal are looking to sign Mustafi, Wenger told his post-match news conference: “We have not closed any deal with anybody at the moment. That’s the answer.
“You speak about Mustafi. Is it Mustafi or anybody else – we haven’t concluded anything at the moment.”
Then, asked whether a deal for the defender was close, Wenger said: “No.”
Arsenal finished in second place in the Premier League table last season and 10 points behind surprise champions Leicester City.
