Arsene Wenger: My thoughts on new Man United and Chelsea managers

Arsene Wenger discusses the new managerial appointments in the Premier League this season

Arsene Wenger admits that there will be something of a world championship of managers in the Premier League this season following the arrivals of Jose Mourinho at Manchester United and Antonio Conte at Chelsea.

Wenger is currently gearing his side up to take on Liverpool at The Emirates on Sunday afternoon in Arsenal’s first game of the Premier League season.

Jurgen Klopp is the new man in charge of the Reds following his arrival as Brendan Rodgers’ successor last October.

Mourinho is also preparing for his first season at Manchester United, while Conte has arrived as Chelsea’s new manager, following the appointment of Pep Guardiola at Manchester City.

And Wenger admits that the top-class managerial talent in the Premier League will make for a fascinating season this term.

Speaking in an interview with Arsenal Player, Wenger said: “Everybody’s ambitious – never has the Premier League been gifted with so many ambitious people or clubs at the start of the season.

“We have Mourinho at Manchester United, Conte at Chelsea, Guardiola at Man City, Klopp at Liverpool, so it’s a little bit a world championship of managers as well.

“Everybody will of course be highly focused on doing well and it will be interesting. One thing you know from the start: not everybody can win the championship and next year, more than ever, it will be tougher for everybody.

“But sometimes the media give too much importance to the managers and I believe that what is important is the quality of the players on the pitch.
“All English teams compete highly to be competitive and have a top squad.”
