The north London side have been widely reported to be closing in on the signing of the Germany international as Wenger looks to bolster his defensive options ahead of the new Premier League season.

Arsenal have reportedly stepped up their interest in Mustafi after Gabriel Paulista was ruled out of action for a number of weeks along with fellow centre-half Per Mertesacker.

Wenger was quizzed about the speculation linking Mustafi with a transfer to The Emirates at his pre-match news conference on Friday morning.

However, the Arsenal boss did not give anything away in typical fashion, as reported by Sky Sports News HQ journalist Kaveh Solhekol.

Arsenal are preparing to host Liverpool in their Premier League opener at Emirates Stadium on Sunday afternoon after their second-placed finish last season.
