Atletico Madrid provide latest transfer update on Chelsea striker
Diego Costa's place is at Chelsea, says Atletico Madrid's president
Atletico Madrid were never interested in bringing back Chelsea striker Diego Costa to Vicente Calderon, according to the club’s president.
The Spain international has been linked with a potential return to los Rojiblancos in the summer transfer window following a disappointing second season at Stamford Bridge.
Former Italy head coach Antonio Conte took over the reins at the west London side earlier this summer and the ex-Juventus boss wasted no time signing Michy Batshuayi in a £34m deal from Ligue 1 side Marseille.
However, the new Chelsea manager has emphasised his desire to keep Costa at the west London side despite adding the Belgium centre-forward to his squad this summer.
And now Atletico’s president Enrique Cerezo has ruled out the possibility of the Champions League runners-up re-signing Costa in the summer transfer window.
“Costa [talks] do not have a long tail or anything of the sort,” Cerezo told Spanish media outlet MARCA.
“Diego has a contract with Chelsea and he belongs to Antonio Conte’s team. Chelsea are our friends, just as the great Atletico man Diego Costa is our friend. But his place is with Chelsea and we are sure that he will be successful there. We cherish Diego for what he has given us and he knows where his home is.”
Costa moved to Chelsea in a £27m deal from Atletico in 2014 after the striker helped Diego Simeone’s side win the La Liga title ahead of Barcelona and Real Madrid.
The Spain international won the Premier League title in his first season at Stamford Bridge.
