Diego Forlan makes bold claim about Man United legend and Paul Pogba
Diego Forlan says Paul Scholes is worth a lot more than Man United target Paul Pogba
Diego Forlan says Paul Pogba is a long way from emulating Manchester United legend Paul Scholes.
The France international has been heavily linked with a world-record move to Old Trafford in the summer transfer window after an impressive four seasons at Juventus.
The Red Devils are thought to be ready to cough up a staggering £100m for the box-to-box midfielder as Jose Mourinho looks to bolster his midfield ahead of the new season.
Forlan played with Scholes during four seasons at the 20-time English champions, winning the Premier League title and the FA Cup alongside the former England midfielder.
And the former Uruguay striker explained why Scholes would be worth so much more than Pogba, despite refusing to criticise the reported transfer fee that United are willing to pay for the France midfielder.
“If Paul Pogba is to cost €120m, imagine how much Manchester United would have needed to pay for Paul Scholes? The midfielder was the best player that I ever played with, by a distance,” Forlan wrote in his column in The National.
“United were lucky in that Scholes had no need or desire to leave the club when he was a player. He was a local boy and a United fan, one of the few great players born near a club who are one of the biggest in the world.
“Pogba’s a good player, I like him. He could well go onto become the best midfielder of his generation. Is he worth the figures being mentioned though? The answer – he’s worth whatever any club is willing to pay for him.”
United have signed three players in the summer transfer window since Mourinho’s appointment as Louis van Gaal.
Pogba moved to Juventus in an £800,000 deal from the 13-time Premier League winners in 2012 after failing to secure regular first-team football under Sir Alex Ferguson.
