Paul Merson states his prediction for Everton v Tottenham

Paul Merson looks ahead to Tottenham's Premier League opener against Everton on Saturday

Paul Merson is backing Everton to hold Tottenham Hotspur to a 1-1 draw in their Premier League opener at Goodison Park on Saturday afternoon.

The Lilywhites are preparing for the new season after having impressed for so much of the last campaign before ending up third in the Premier League table.

Everton, meanwhile, are gearing up for their first campaign under new manager Ronald Koeman following the sacking of Roberto Martinez earlier in the summer.

Tottenham will be aiming to get their season off to a positive start as they look to build on their top-three finish from last term.

However, former Arsenal man Merson feels that Spurs are going to have their work cut out on Merseyside on Saturday, while also giving his nod of approval to Everton’s transfer business so far this summer.

Writing in his column for Sky Sports, Merson said: “I have played at Everton enough times to know this is a tricky first game for Tottenham. It’s a difficult place to play, especially on the opening day, and I like Ronald Koeman’s business so far – selling John Stones for £47.5m and buying Ashley Williams for £12m, I like that.

“For Spurs, it depends if there is a hangover from Euro 2016 for players like Harry Kane and Dele Alli. Tottenham have a team already but I feel they need to add more to their squad because they’re a bit light.

“I don’t think they’ve done enough yet to go on and win the Premier League.”

Tottenham are also preparing for a return to the Champions League this season after booking their place in the group stage thanks to their top-three finish.
