Ferdinand: Martial can be unstoppable for Man United if he makes this one change

Rio Ferdinand delivers his verdict on Anthony Martial ahead of his second season at Manchester United

Rio Ferdinand has encouraged Anthony Martial to make more runs off the ball for Manchester United this season as he continues his development in the Premier League.

The France striker is currently gearing up for his second season in the Premier League after arriving at the club from Monaco last summer.

Martial enjoyed a fruitful first campaign at Old Trafford and earned plenty of new admirers for his attacking style of play.

However, former United defender Ferdinand feels that the striker should start making more runs in behind defenders to help take his game to the next level.

Speaking on BT Sport after Manchester United’s Community Shield win over Leicester City on Sunday, Ferdinand said: “He’s great when he gets the ball at his feet and turns and runs at you – but the modern-day player needs to do both.

“If you’re at the top end of the game, you need to run in behind. The Bales, the Ronaldos, the Messis, the Neymars – they all run without the ball as much with it.

“If he adds that to his game, he will be an unbelievable threat.”

Martial will be hoping to feature for United when the Red Devils take on Bournemouth in their Premier League opener next Sunday afternoon.

Manchester United finished fifth and won the FA Cup last season under Louis van Gaal.
