Former Man United man makes bold claim about Tottenham
Johnny Giles runs the rule over Tottenham Hotspur's title prospects
Tottenham Hotspur have missed their chance to win the Premier League title, according to Johnny Giles.
The Lilywhites were title contenders last season but Mauricio Pochettino’s side faltered in their final four games as Leicester City won their first-ever Premier League title.
Tottenham failed to win any of their last four fixtures as their north London rivals Arsenal managed to hoist themselves about Spurs and into the runners-up spot on the final day of the season.
Pochettino has only added two players to his squad in the summer transfer window, signing Victor Wanyama in a £25m deal from Southampton before landing Dutch striker Vincent Janssen in a £19m transfer from AZ Alkmaar.
And former Manchester United and Republic of Ireland midfielder Giles poured cold water on talk of Tottenham winning a first Premier League title this season.
“Spurs failed badly last season. Spurs collapsed at the end of the season,” Giles told Newstalk.
“He hasn’t strengthened the team that much. They were a disappointment. The other teams have caught up with them and I don’t see them as serious contenders for the title.”
Tottenham drew 1-1 with Everton in their opening game of the Premier League season after Erik Lamela cancelled out Ross Barkley’s opener at Goodison Park.
The Lilywhites will host London rivals Crystal Palace in their next Premier League fixture on Saturday 20 August.
