Gary Neville delivers scathing verdict on Chelsea’s Eden Hazard
Gary Neville delivers an honest assessment on what Chelsea should expect from Eden Hazard this season
Gary Neville has warned Eden Hazard that he needs to step his game up and prove himself to everyone once again with Chelsea this season.
The Belgian playmaker came in for plenty of criticism last term for failing to produce consistent performances for the Blues as Chelsea endured a season to forget.
The 25-year-old struggled for form and fitness as Chelsea ended up 10th in the Premier League table with their title defence in tatters.
It was a sharp decline from a player who was in such fine form the season before, as he helped Chelsea win the Premier League and League Cup under Jose Mourinho.
Hazard was voted as the PFA player of the year in the 2014-15 campaign but was a shadow of his former self last term.
And former Manchester United defender Neville feels that the Belgium international has plenty to prove again this season under new manager Antonio Conte.
Speaking on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football, Neville said: “If you look at what happened last season, it was such a poor one for him.
“Four goals and three assists in 31 appearances – that is absolutely devastatingly short of where he should be as a football player.
“I have to question his mentality because the really great players don’t dip like that. They don’t get so close to the very best in the world and then drop off.
“He has got to prove himself to everybody again that he can deliver those number that he did in [2013-14].”
