Gary Neville reacts to Chelsea’s 2-1 win over West Ham
Gary Neville says Chelsea were worthy winners after Eden Hazard and Diego Costa both score in 2-1 win
Gary Neville felt that Chelsea were worthy winners after the Blues secured a 2-1 victory over West Ham United at Stamford Bridge on Monday night.
After a goalless first half in west London, Chelsea went 1-0 up through Eden Hazard’s penalty in the 47th minute after Michail Antonio fouled Cesar Azpilicueta.
However, the east London outfit battled back and drew level in the 77th minute when James Collins fired home.
But Costa had the final say when he rifled in a low shot into the bottom corner in the 89th minute to hand Chelsea three points in Antonio Conte’s first Premier League game in charge at Stamford Bridge.
Speaking on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football, Neville said: “Chelsea stepped off the gas after around 55 minutes and it nearly cost them.
“But they’ll be delighted. I thought they played well and they were the better team throughout the game.
“West Ham felt a little bit more confident after they got the goal but I have to say, Chelsea were the better team and deserved to win.
“For about 15 or 20 minutes they [Chelsea] were the better team, they just need to [learn to] kill teams off.”
Hazard was named man of the match as he helped to inspire the Blues to victory over their London rivals in their first game under their new manager.
Next up for Chelsea in the Premier League is a trip to Watford on Saturday afternoon.
