Graeme Souness issues stark warning to new Liverpool signing
Graeme Souness runs the rule over new Liverpool signing Sadio Mane
Graeme Souness has warned Sadio Mane that he will have to shoulder a lot of responsibility in the Liverpool side this season.
The Reds completed the £30m signing of the Senegal international from Premier League rivals Southampton at the start of July as Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp looks to bolster his attacking options at Anfield.
Mane, who was previously linked with Arsenal and Manchester United, scored 21 times in 67 appearances for Southampton during two seasons at St Mary’s following his move from Red Bull Salzburg in 2014.
The African forward is the most expensive of Klopp’s seven signings so far, with Netherlands international Georginio Wijnaldum completing a £25m switch from relegated Newcastle United.
However, former Liverpool captain Souness believes Mane will be under a lot of pressure to provide the Reds with a greater goal threat from midfield in the 2016/17 season.
“He will have a lot of responsibility on his shoulders at Liverpool,” Souness told Sky Sports. “I like him. He’s a goalscorer and he can score different types of goals. He’s quick, he’s energetic and I think he will do well.”
Liverpool are bidding to end a 26-year wait to win the English top-flight crown.
Klopp is preparing for his first full season in charge of Liverpool after the Reds limped to an eighth-place finish last term.
