Graeme Souness makes bold prediction about Joel Matip and Liverpool
Graeme Souness expects Joel Matip to become a first-choice Liverpool centre-half
Graeme Souness believes Joel Matip will establish himself as a first-choice centre-half under Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.
The Cameroon international started his first Premier League game at White Hart Lane on Saturday afternoon as Liverpool drew 1-1 with top-four rivals Tottenham Hotspur.
Matip partnered Croatian defender Dejan Lovren at centre-half as the African looks to established himself above fellow new signing Ragnar Klavan and former Paris Saint-Germain defender Mamadou Sakho in the pecking order.
The 24-year-old helped Liverpool keep a clean sheet in his first appearance for the Reds mid-week as the Merseyside outfit were 5-0 winners against Burton Albion at the Pirelli Stadium.
Former Reds captain Souness believes Matip will establish himself as one half of Klopp’s first-choice partnership alongside Lovren this season.
“He is the one who has been brought in to form that partnership,” Souness told Sky Sports after Saturday’s 1-1 draw at White Hart Lane.
Matip moved to Liverpool on a free transfer from Schalke 04 earlier this summer after the defender agreed a deal earlier this year.
Liverpool have collected four points from three Premier League games after a 4-3 victory over Arsenal was followed by a surprise 2-0 defeat by Burnley.
