Graeme Souness uses Man United man to make point about Tottenham signing
Graeme Souness has his say on Tottenham's summer transfer business
Graeme Souness has described Tottenham’s signing of Vincent Janssen from AZ Alkmaar as a “gamble”.
Spurs brought in the 22-year-old Dutchman earlier in the summer as Mauricio Pochettino moved quickly to bolster his attacking options at White Hart Lane and ease the pressure on top striker Harry Kane.
The north London side are preparing for a return to the Champions League this season as they look to challenge on four fronts.
However, former Liverpool man Souness is not convinced by the arrival of Janssen and pointed to Manchester United’s signing of Memphis Depay last year as an example of a player from Holland failing to deliver in the Premier League.
Writing in his column for The Sunday Times, Souness said:” They’ve signed Vincent Janssen on the back of one good season at AZ Alkmaar
“That’s a gamble when you look at Memphis Depay, who was meant to be the best player in Holland when he went to Manchester United.
“It’s not the strongest league in Europe.”
Spurs challenged for the title for much of last season but ended up falling short and finishing third in the table.
