Ian Wright delivers blunt verdict on Arsenal’s decision to loan out Joel Campbell
Ian Wright questions Arsenal's decision to allow Joel Campbell to leave on a season-long loan
Ian Wright has criticised Arsenal’s decision to send Joel Campbell out on loan.
The Costa Rica international completed a temporary move to Portuguese side Sporting Lisbon last weekend despite Arsenal’s lack of options up front due to Danny Welbeck’s injury.
Campbell enjoyed a run in Arsene Wenger’s starting line-up in the 2015/16 season and the 24-year-old finished with a return of four goals in all competitions for the Gunners.
The South American has now gone on the sixth loan spell of his journeyman career so far after previously moving to Puntarenas, Lorient, Real Betis, Olympiakos and Villarreal.
However, former Arsenal striker Wright, who won the Premier League and FA Cup double in 1998, believes Campbell is better than some of the attacking options currently at Wenger’s disposal.
“What I saw of Joel Campbell when he played and played well, he gave more than certain players who are still in Arsenal first-team right now,” Wright told the Sun Goals podcast.
Arsenal haven’t won the Premier League title since 2004 when Thierry Henry and Patrick Vieira were a key part of Wenger’s side in their famous unbeaten season.
The Gunners finished in second place in the table last season but without any silverware after premature exits in the Champions League and the League Cup.
