Ian Wright: Why new Man United signing won’t overwhelm Wayne Rooney

Ian Wright discusses the relationship between Manchester United striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Wayne Rooney

Ian Wright says Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney will be happy to play a secondary role to Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

The Red Devils made a winning start to their Premier League campaign on Sunday after a 3-1 victory over Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium.

Juan Mata broke the deadlock for Jose Mourinho’s side on the south coast before Rooney doubled United’s lead and Ibrahimovic sealed three points minutes later.

The Swedish legend was the second of Mourinho’s summer signings after the 34-year-old completed a free transfer from Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain last month.

Asked if Rooney might feel overwhelmed by the prospect of playing alongside Ibrahimovic, former Arsenal striker Wright was adamant that the former AC Milan and Barcelona striker would bring the best out of the United skipper.

“He won’t get overwhelmed by Zlatan Ibrahimovic,” Wright told The Sun Goals podcast.

“He has stepped in the shadow of Ronaldo and let Ronaldo get on with it. Wayne Rooney hasn’t got a problem playing with a player of stature. It helps him. People like Zlatan are only going to help.”

The Reds Devils are currently leading the Premier League table ahead of Liverpool and Chelsea following Sunday’s 3-1 victory over Bournemouth.
