Jamie Carragher can’t wait to see Man United signing link up with Wayne Rooney
Jamie Carragher explains why he is excited about Wayne Rooney and Paul Pogba's partnership for Manchester United
Jamie Carragher is backing Wayne Rooney and Paul Pogba to forge a formidable partnership for Manchester United this season.
The France midfielder will be hoping to make his first Premier League appearance of the season for United when Jose Mourinho’s men host Southampton at Old Trafford on Friday night.
Pogba missed United’s Premier League opener at Bournemouth on Sunday as Mourinho’s men got their top-flight campaign off to a winning start on the south coast.
However, former Liverpool defender Carragher feels that Rooney’s evolving position could end up being of benefit to Manchester United this season.
Speaking on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football, Carragher said: “When Paul Pogba comes into this team, he’s a box-to-box player. I think that [Rooney and Pogba] could be a fantastic partnership going forward for Manchester United.
“At times, Pogba will find himself in the number 10 role when Rooney’s deeper. When he runs past him, Rooney can fill in for him in central midfield.
“I think this could be a bonus for Manchester United considering he has to come into the team.”
United finished in fifth place in the Premier League table last season and won the FA Cup under Louis van Gaal.
The Red Devils – who appointed Mourinho as Van Gaal’s successor back in May – have not won the top-flight title since their last triumph under Sir Alex Ferguson in the 2012-13 season.
