Jamie Carragher: Jurgen Klopp needs to make this Liverpool signing
Jamie Carragher is urging the Liverpool manager to sign a left-back this summer
Jamie Carragher has urged Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp to sign another left-back before the start of the Premier League season.
The Reds have been one of the busiest clubs in the summer transfer window after completing an impressive seven deals ahead of Klopp’s first full campaign in charge at Anfield.
Milner did a good job against Barcelona but you certainly wouldn’t want to go into the season without one more recognised left-back
However, the Liverpool boss has failed to sign a recognised left-back despite Alberto Moreno’s inconsistent performances in the Premier League and the Europa League last term.
Klopp has allowed full-backs Brad Smith and Jon Flanagan to leave the Merseyside club to compound Liverpool’s lack of cover at left-back.
Vice-captain James Milner played as a makeshift full-back in Liverpool’s 4-0 victory over Barcelona in the International Champions Cup at Wembley at the weekend.
But former Liverpool defender Carragher warned that Klopp needs to strengthen the left-back position to ensure Moreno has competition.
“James Milner has a good understanding of the game and great fitness levels, but of course Liverpool need to sign a left-back,” Carragher told Sky Sports – as quoted by The Liverpool Echo.
“They have sold Brad Smith to Bournemouth and you need two players for every position so they need someone else alongside Alberto Moreno.
“Milner did a good job against Barcelona but you certainly wouldn’t want to go into the season without one more recognised left-back.”
Liverpool finished in eighth place in the Premier League last season after Klopp took over the reins from Brendan Rodgers in October.
The Reds haven’t won the Premier League title since the division’s inception in 1993.
