Jason Cundy makes bold claim about Chelsea and Romelu Lukaku
Jason Cundy delivers his ruthless verdict on Chelsea target Romelu Lukaku
Jason Cundy has warned Chelsea that Everton striker Romelu Lukaku isn’t worth £75m.
The Blues are being linked with a big-money offer for the Belgium international as new Chelsea manager Antonio Conte looks to bolster his squad ahead of the 2016/17 Premier League season.
The west London side sold Lukaku to Everton in a £27m deal in 2013 after Jose Mourinho deemed the 23-year-old centre-forward surplus to requirements at Stamford Bridge.
The Belgian star scored 17 times in 37 Premier League games for the Toffees last season as the Merseyside outfit finished in the bottom half of the table despite their leading striker’s goals.
However, former Chelsea defender Cundy has his reservations about Lukaku and doesn’t believe the 2015 Premier League champions should spend a club-record fee on the centre-forward.
“I’m still not completely and utterly convinced by him [Lukaku]. I wouldn’t have sold him [from Chelsea], because I saw the potential of this kid,” Cundy told talkSPORT.
“But his performances at times, I find he can be just a bit of a waste of space. He goes missing in some games, the ball bounces off him, his hold up play could be better.
“Yes, he scores goals but [if you’re asking me if he’s worth that money], I think there’s more to come from this boy. To be worth that type of money – £75million? I don’t see a £75m striker there.”
Conte has already signed Belgium star Michy Batshuayi in a £34m deal from Ligue 1 side Marseille earlier in the summer transfer window.
Chelsea also completed a £30m deal for Leicester City’s title-winning midfielder N’Golo Kante last month.
The Blues will start their Premier League campaign with a clash against bitter London rivals West Ham United.
