John Hartson: Arsene Wenger needs to make these Arsenal signings
John Hartson singles out what areas Arsenal still need to strengthen
John Hartson says Arsenal still need a new centre-half and centre-forward ahead of Sunday’s opener against Liverpool at the Emirates Stadium.
The Gunners have been linked with a host of different players in the summer transfer window but Arsene Wenger has only signed three players so far.
The Frenchman snapped up Switzerland midfielder Granit Xhaka in a £33m deal from Bundesliga side Borussia Monchengladbach before the start of Euro 2016.
Wenger signed Japanese forward Takuma Asano and Bolton Wanderers defender Rob Holding last month ahead of their tour of the United States.
But former Arsenal striker Hartson believes the Gunners are still short on players ahead of the new Premier League season.
“They need another centre-half and striker but I picked Arsenal to finish second because I think they will add another couple of players before the window closes at the end of August – I think Wenger may surprise us there,” Hartson told BBC Sport.
Arsenal will host Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool side in their season opener at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday evening.
The Gunners finished in second place in the Premier League table but ended up 10 points champions Leicester City.
The north London side haven’t won the Premier League title since 2004 when Thierry Henry and Patrick Vieira inspired Arsenal to glory.
