John Hartson makes bold prediction about Tottenham and top four
John Hartson is tipping Tottenham Hotspur to finish in fifth place
John Hartson believes Tottenham Hotspur will struggle to finish in the Premier League’s top four this season.
The Lilywhites were one of the most-impressive sides last term as Mauricio Pochettino’s pushed Leicester City in the Premier League title race.
Tottenham’s four-game winless to end the season allowed Arsenal to hoist themselves above their north London rivals and secure second spot on the final day of the season.
Pochettino has been linked with a host of players in the summer transfer window but the Spurs manager has only signed two players so far – Victor Wanyama and Vincent Janssen.
And former Arsenal striker Hartson believes Tottenham will finish in fifth place and outside the Champions League spots despite the progress made last season.
“I might be doing them an injustice to put them fifth but there will be a lot more pressure on them this season and, along with having to cope with the Champions League, that will not help,” Hartson told BBC Sport.
“You know what fans are like – they get a bit of success and expectancy level goes through the roof. It is the same with West Ham, who finished seventh last season – it will be very hard for them to repeat that, let alone improve on it.”
Tottenham signed Kenya international Wanyama in a £25m deal from Pochettino’s former employers Southampton earlier this summer.
Spurs landed the Eredivisie’s leading goal-scorer Janssen in a £19m deal from AZ Alkmaar last months after weeks of speculation linking Tottenham with the Netherlands international.
Harry Kane finished as the Premier League’s highest-scoring player last season after a return of 25 goals in 37 games.
