Johnny Giles: This is who Man United need more than Paul Pogba
Johnny Giles questions Manchester United's signing of Paul Pogba
Johnny Giles believes Manchester United need a player more in the mould of Paul Scholes rather than new signing Paul Pogba.
The France international finally completed a £92m move to the Red Devils from Serie A champions Juventus on Tuesday.
Pogba scored eight times and made 12 assists in 35 top-flight games in Italy last season as Juventus won a fifth successive Serie A title.
The 23-year-old is one of four summer signings that have arrived at Old Trafford after Jose Mourinho was appointed as Louis van Gaal’s successor in May.
But former United midfielder Giles isn’t sure whether Pogba is the midfield solution that the Red Devils require in the summer transfer window.
“What Man United need more than anyone else is a Paul Scholes,” Giles told Newstalk.
“That’s what Man United really need most. The way Mourinho is talking, it’s as if Pogba is going to do that job. I don’t think Pogba is capable of doing that job. He is a very talented lad. He didn’t do what needed to be done for France.”
Pogba moved to Juventus from United in an £800,000 deal in 2012 after failing to secure a regular starting spot in Sir Alex Ferguson’s side.
The French midfielder won four successive Serie A titles with the Turin side as well as finishing as a Champions League runner-up in 2015.
Pogba is the most-expensive signing in Unitd’s history after his transfer eclipsed the £59.7m fee that the Red Devils paid for Angel di Maria.
