Jose Mourinho has a warning for Man United fans ahead of opener
Jose Mourinho accepts that not all of his Manchester United squad will be in top shape heading into Sunday's opener
Jose Mourinho has warned Manchester United fans that his side may not start the season “like a train” because many of his players are lacking match fitness.
The Red Devils are currently preparing for the first Premier League game of the Mourinho era following the Portuguese coach’s appointment as the club’s new manager back in May.
United are gearing up for their trip to Bournemouth on Sunday afternoon on the back of a compact pre-season training schedule in which many of Mourinho’s players returned late from extended summer holidays following international duty.
And Mourinho accepts that his team may not be in the peak physical condition as they prepare for Sunday’s game against Eddie Howe’s men on the south coast.
Speaking at his pre-match news conference at Carrington on Friday afternoon, Mourinho said: “I want to go into the Premier League, day one, with 33 training sessions.
“Instead of 33 training sessions, which would be the normal situation 10, 15 years ago, I have guys who are going into Premier League day one with eight training sessions.
“You cannot start as a train. You can start good and in condition to win the match. It’s a very difficult match for us but we are in condition to win it but not at the highest intensity. It’s not possible.”
United finished in fifth place in the Premier League table last season as they missed out on qualification for the Champions League under Louis van Gaal.
The Red Devils have not won the title since Sir Alex Ferguson was in charge in the 2012-13 season.
