Jose Mourinho provides Man United update on Timothy Fosu-Mensah
Jose Mourinho explains Timothy Fosu-Mensah's absence from the Manchester United first team
Jose Mourinho has appeared to pour cold water on talk of Timothy Fosu-Mensah leaving Manchester United in the summer transfer window.
The Daily Mail reported earlier this week that Mourinho was ready to sell nine players in the summer transfer window and Fosu-Mensah was one of the members of the United manager’s squad facing an uncertain future.
The Netherlands youngster trained with United’s Under-21 side during the week in a move that fuelled speculation that the 19-year-old could be set for a surprise Old Trafford departure.
However, United manager Mourinho has seemingly quashed the prospect of Fosu-Mensah leaving Old Trafford this summer after the 53-year-old explained the thinking behind the decision to make the defender train with the club’s Under-21 side.
“Fosu-Mensah is not so much injured,” Mourinho told MUTV – as quoted by the Manchester Evening News.
“But he has this little thing that we want to be careful with given that he is young. He is separate from the group until he is 100 per cent back.
“Chris Smalling has had a recurrence of an old injury from the previous season. We shall see what happens, but already he is suspended for the first game against Bournemouth.”
Fosu-Mensah emerged as an exciting prospect under Mourinho’s predecessor Louis van Gaal in the second half of last season after the teenager made 10 appearances in all competitions.
The Red Devils will play their first competitive game under Mourinho in the Community Shield on 7 August as the 20-time English champions take on Leicester City.
