Jose Mourinho: What I really think about Man United’s Memphis Depay
Jose Mourinho delivers an update about Memphis Depay's future at Manchester United beyond the summer
Jose Mourinho has insisted that he has great belief in Memphis Depay following his mixed first season at Manchester United.
The Netherlands international did not live up to expectations in his first campaign at Old Trafford after arriving to much fanfare from PSV Eindhoven last May.
Depay struggled to hold down a regular starting spot in Louis van Gaal’s first team last season as the Red Devils stuttered to a fifth-placed finish in the Premier League table.
However, speaking ahead of Manchester United’s Premier League opener against Bournemouth on Sunday afternoon, Mourinho insisted that the Netherlands international very much features in his plans this season.
Mourinho is quoted as saying by United’s website: “Last season is something I don’t want to go into too much where Memphis is concerned; all I know is the player that I watched in the 2014 World Cup and the player I watched many times at PSV [Eindhoven].
“With that player in mind, I know I want to keep him – I want to try everything [to help him succeed].
“So far, I have seen a good and professional boy. You can see him driving a nice car and you might think that this guy’s not thinking about football, but that is not the case.
“The kid thinks about football a lot and he suffers because he is frustrated with what happened last season, but he will be back.”
United finished fifth and won the FA Cup last season but opted to sack Louis van Gaal back in May and bring in Mourinho as his successor shortly after.
The Red Devils have not won the Premier League title since their last triumph under Sir Alex Ferguson in the 2012-13 season.
