Liverpool are rivalling Arsenal for the signature of Valencia defender Shkodran Mustafi, according to reports in Spain.

Ser Deportivos Valencia – as quoted by Yahoo’s La Liga reporter Andrew Gaffney – are reporting that Liverpool have made contact with the Spanish club over the possibility of signing their defender.

Gaffney went on to tweet that Valencia could be open to signing out-of-favour Liverpool forward Luis Alberto move to Los Che as part of a deal for the highly-rated Germany defender.

Arsenal have been heavily linked with a move for the 24-year-old versatile defender as Arsene Wenger attempts to bolster his defensive options following injury to Per Mertesacker and Gabriel Paulista.

Mustafi, who was part of Joachim Low’s side that reached the Euro 2016 semi-finals, has scored six times in 78 appearances in all competitions for Valencia after the defender moved to the La Liga side in a £6m deal from Sampdoria in 2014.

The German star started his career at Everton but failed to make any Premier League appearances for the Toffees during a three-year stay at Goodison Park between 2009 and 2012.
