Paul Merson has backed Manchester United to ease to a comfortable victory over Southampton in their first Premier League game at Old Trafford this season.

The Red Devils were 3-1 winners against Bournemouth in the opening weekend of the Premier League after goals from Juan Mata, Wayne Rooney and Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

I’m not sure if Paul Pogba will play to be honest because I’d be surprised if Mourinho changed his team

World-record signing Paul Pogba was forced to sit out the Vitality Stadium clash due to a suspension which the midfielder carried over from Serie A.

However, United manager Jose Mourinho has confirmed that the France international will play some minutes against the Saints at Old Trafford.

Former Arsenal and England midfielder Merson believes the 20-time English champions will have too much for the visitors on Friday night.

“Southampton started poorly against Watford, who were well on top in the first half. They clawed their way back to get a draw, but they’ll need to be much better against United,” Merson told Sky Sports.

“I’m not sure if Paul Pogba will play to be honest because I’d be surprised if Mourinho changed his team.

“It’s his first home game and while they didn’t play great at Bournemouth on Sunday, they still got a good result, and I think it will be fairly comfortable on Friday.”

Enhanced odds: Get 4/1 on Man Utd to beat Southampton

United are currently at the top of the Premier League table after a 3-1 win against Bournemouth on the opening weekend.

The Red Devils are narrowly ahead of Liverpool and Chelsea in the top-flight standings.
