Mark Lawrenson says Arsene Wenger is acting like Arsenal’s transfer funds are his own money in the summer transfer window.

The Gunners manager has been criticised – again – for his failure to significantly strengthen the Arsenal squad following the end of the 2015/16 season.

Wenger started his summer transfer business with the £33m signing of Switzerland international Granit Xhaka from Bundesliga side Borussia Monchengladbach before Euro 2016.

The Arsenal manager has also signed Japanese forward Takuma Asano and Bolton Wanderers defender Rob Holding.

However, the Gunners are currently coping with an injury crisis at the back following fitness setbacks for Per Mertesacker and Gabriel Paulista.

Former Liverpool defender Lawrenson dissected Wenger’s approach to transfer markets ahead of Arsenal’s trip to Leicester City at King Power Stadium on Saturday evening.

“I am full of admiration for Wenger but it is like he is spending his own money, and he was almost asking for trouble against Liverpool last week,” Lawrenson told BBC Sport.

“Rob Holding, who played alongside Calum Chambers at the back, looks like he could turn out to be a really good player but he was just chucked in and had to deal with a lightning-quick attack that was running at him from all angles.”

Arsenal lost 4-3 to Liverpool in their Premier League opener at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
