Mark Lawrenson makes bold claim about Jose Mourinho and Man United
Jose Mourinho will prioritise Premier League over Europa League, according to Mark Lawrenson
Mark Lawrenson believes Jose Mourinho will forget about the Europa League and transform Manchester United into Premier League champions.
The Red Devils appointed the former Inter Milan and Real Madrid manager as Louis van Gaal’s successor in May after the Red Devils finished in fifth place and missed out on Champions League qualification last season.
Mourinho has wasted no time bolstering his United squad ahead of the 2016/17 campaign after signing Eric Bailly, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Paul Pogba over the past few months.
United will start the new Premier League season with a trip to Eddie Howe’s Bournemouth side at Vitality Stadium in Sunday’s early kick-off.
Former Liverpool defender Lawrenson believes Mourinho will prioritise the Premier League ahead of the Europa League which should help their bid to win a first English top-flight crown since 2013.
“They have got a chance of the title because I think Mourinho is the type of manager who will not be bothered about the Europa League,” Lawrenson told BBC Sport.
“With all those games to play, he will not let it get in the way.”
Mourinho signed Eric Bailly in a £30m deal from La Liga side Villarreal before Zlatan Ibrahimovic completed a free transfer to United from Paris Saint-Germain.
The 20-time English champions won their first silverware of the season last weekend after a 2-1 victory over Leicester City in Community Shield.
