The west London side made a winning start under their new Italian manager on Monday night after Diego Costa’s 89th-minute strike sealed a 2-1 victory over West Ham United at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea will have too much quality for them
Conte has been linked with a host of players in the summer transfer window but the Blues boss has only signed two players so far.
Belgium striker Michy Batshuayi became the first signing of the Conte era after his £33m switch from Ligue 1 side Marseille.
The Blues also completed a £32m deal for Leicester City’s title-winning midfielder N’Golo Kante to bolster his defensive options.
Former Liverpool and Republic of Ireland defender Lawrenson expects Chelsea to have too much quality for the west London side.
“Chelsea deserved to beat West Ham on Monday but they were fortuitous because, before he got the winner, Diego Costa should have been shown a second yellow card for his challenge on Hammers keeper Adrian,” Lawrenson told BBC Sport.
“There is still room for lots of improvement from the Blues though, and they will have to work hard to break Watford down too.
“I am still waiting to see exactly what Hornets boss Walter Mazzarri’s philosophy will be in the Premier League, but I think Chelsea will have too much quality for them.”
Chelsea are in third place behind leaders Manchester United and Liverpool in the Premier League table.
The Blues won the Premier League crown in 2015 but finished in tenth place last term.
