Matteo Darmian: My thoughts on Man United life under Jose Mourinho
Matteo Darmian gives his take on new Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho
Matteo Darmian has admitted that he has been very impressed by what he has seen from Jose Mourinho since the Portuguese coach’s appointment as the club’s new manager.
The Italy defender only reported back to Old Trafford for pre-season training last week after being given an extended summer holiday following his involvement in Euro 2016 with Italy.
The former Torino defender – who joined United last summer – is now preparing for his first taste of life under Mourinho as the Red Devils prepare for their Community Shield clash with Leicester City this weekend.
Darmian was a second-half substitute during United’s 5-2 win over Galatasaray on Saturday night.
And the defender has given his take on his first impressions of what life will be like under Mourinho at Old Trafford.
Speaking to MUTV after Saturday’s game, Darmian said: “The game was important to play because I’d worked for just one week.
“I came back only last week so I have to improve my condition but it was OK out there.
“I think it’s good to have such competition within the squad because there are a lot of good players for every position in a big team.
“You just have to be ready for when the manager gives you a chance. I think he’s a great manager, he’s very hungry and his victories and successes speak volumes for him.
“We want to improve this week to be ready for the first game of the season.”
United finished fifth and won the FA Cup in Darmian’s first season at the club before they sacked Louis van Gaal and brought in Mourinho as his successor back in May.
