Michael Ballack has likened N’Golo Kante to Chelsea and France legend Claude Makelele.

The defensive midfielder became Antonio Conte’s second signing of the summer after the west London side coughed up a £32m fee for Leicester City’s title-winning talisman.

Kante made his Blues debut in their 2-1 victory over West Ham United at Stamford Bridge on Monday night as Diego Costa’s 89th-minute winner sealed a slender win for the hosts.

The France international partnered Serbia midfielder Nemanja Matic for the visit of the Hammers as Kante made a positive impression on his first competitive appearance in a Blues shirt.

Former Chelsea midfielder Ballack, who was part of their title-winning side in 2006, says he can see similarities between Kante and Makelele.

“Players were underperforming and I think that’s why Chelsea made the right decision to buy this player, because he was a key player at Leicester,” Ballack told Omnisport – as quoted by The Metro.

“Also, when I saw him play for the French team, he reminds me a bit of [Claude] Makelele in his style of play.

“I think he could give that team a solid basis which is necessary for the right balance of the team in terms of offensive and defensive.

“He’s the right player, he seems the right player, he’s a good buy but still he has to deliver and he has to show that also adapt to a bigger club and bigger expectations which is not easy. But I think on paper it’s a good signing.”

Chelsea have also signed Belgium striker Michy Batshuayi in a £33m deal from Ligue 1 side Marseille.

The Blues finished in tenth place in the Premier League last term under Jose Mourinho and Guus Hiddink.

The west London have won the Premier League on four previous occasions.
