Neville: Why I want Man United to be hated again under Mourinho
Phil Neville discusses Jose Mourinho's appointment as Manchester United's new manager
Phil Neville has said that he wants Manchester United to become “hated” in the Premier League once again under new manager Jose Mourinho.
The Portuguese coach is currently preparing for his first season in charge at Old Trafford following his arrival at the club back in May.
The former Chelsea boss has already secured his first piece of silverware as United boss after he led the Red Devils to a 2-1 win over Leicester City in the Community Shield clash at Wembley.
United finished fifth and won the FA Cup under Louis van Gaal last term in what was largely considered to be a disappointing campaign for the Red Devils.
And former United defender Neville is hoping that Mourinho can bring the fear factor back to Old Trafford in the coming seasons.
Speaking in an interview with the Daily Mail, Neville said: “I’ve not enjoyed the last couple of seasons when a few people were laughing at us and people were thinking, ‘oh, we’re only playing Man United'”
“When United play against teams at Old Trafford, there hasn’t been the trepidation there has been in the past. Now that trepidation is back.
“I want us to be hated again, I want people to be hating Man United. To be growling at us, to be snarling at us, to be jealous of us again. That had gone for the past two years.
“People have said United can’t attract the best players in the world but he has proven that they can.
“Obviously, he has great financial wealth behind him but I think he has bought well and he has a proven track record of winning in his first season.
“I don’t think he will take anything less, he will be ruthless with the team, ruthless within the club and maybe that is what United needed.”
United take on Bournemouth in their first Premier League game of the season on Sunday afternoon.
