Niall Quinn: New Man United signing will remind Arsenal fans of this legend
Niall Quinn says Paul Pogba is the type of player that Arsene Wenger would never sign for Arsenal
Niall Quinn believes Manchester United’s signing of Paul Pogba is even more painful for Arsenal supporters as the midfielder is similar to Gunners legend Patrick Vieira.
The Red Devils completed a £92m deal for the France international last week after months of speculation linking United with a big-money deal for Pogba.
For Arsenal fans he will always remind them of the Patrick Vieira-like presence they don’t have anymore
The 23-year-old won four successive Serie A titles at Juventus after the midfielder completed a move to Turin from Old Trafford in 2012.
Arsenal have struggled to replace Patrick Vieira since the France legend moved to the Serie A giants in 2005 – a year after the north London side’s last Premier League title success.
And former Arsenal striker Quinn believes Pogba is similar to Vieira but admitted that the midfielder is type of player that Wenger will never sign for the Gunners.
“Manchester United were ready when the curtain went up for the early game, beating Bournemouth comfortably on the coast. Zlatan looked like the right mix of a big star and a big bruiser who can thrive in the English game,” Quinn told Sky Sports.
“And Pogba, waiting in the wings, seems pointedly like the sort of player Wenger will just never sign. Maybe Pogba will prove to be worth the money, maybe he will fall just short. But for Arsenal fans he will always remind them of the Patrick Vieira-like presence they don’t have anymore.”
Pogba scored eight times and made 12 assists in 35 Serie A appearances for Juventus last season.
The Gunners lost 4-3 to Liverpool in their opening Premier League game of the new season at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday evening.
Arsenal haven’t won the Premier League title since 2004 when Vieira played a key role in their unbeaten season.
