Paul Merson boldly predicts where Chelsea and Man United will finish this season
Paul Merson predicts the Premier League's top three teams ahead of the 2016-17 season
Paul Merson is backing Chelsea to be crowned Premier League champions this season under new manager Antonio Conte.
The Blues are currently gearing up for their first campaign under their new boss after he was appointed as the club’s new manager earlier in the year.
Chelsea endured a disastrous campaign last year as they ended up 10th in the Premier League with their title defence in tatters.
However, their lowly finish means that they will not have the distraction of European football this season, and former Arsenal man Merson is tipping the west London club to win the title.
Writing in his column for Sky Sports, Merson said: “I’m going for Chelsea to be champions on the strength of the manager, Antonio Conte, and Eden Hazard.
“The Belgium international had a terrible campaign last season, but could still be the best player in the league. If he gets going again then the Blues could sneak their way to the top.”
The former midfielder also predicted that Manchester United will finish third in the table behind Manchester City this season as the Red Devils prepare for their first campaign under new boss Jose Mourinho.
He continued: “I’ll put Man City second and I could make a case for Manchester United winning the title with Jose Mourinho in charge. They have a big squad full of big players.”
United take on Bournemouth on Sunday, while Chelsea host West Ham next Monday night.
