Paul Merson makes worried claim about Alexis Sanchez and Arsenal
Paul Merson casts doubt on Alexis Sanchez's ability to lead the Arsenal front-line this season
Paul Merson does not believe that Alexis Sanchez has what it takes to fire Arsenal to the Premier League title by playing up front this season.
The Gunners are currently preparing for their Premier League opener against Liverpool at The Emirates on Saturday afternoon as the north London side look to kick off their season with a win.
Arsenal are looking short up front at present, with Olivier Giroud having only returned to training this week following his extended summer holiday.
The north London side have been linked with a host of top forwards in the summer transfer window but have thus far only recruited young striker Takuma Asano.
And former Arsenal man Merson does not feel that Sanchez is capable of being the man to lead the Gunners’ front-line throughout the season.
Speaking in an interview with Sky Sports, Merson said: “If Giroud does not play this week and Sanchez has to play up front, well, I mean Sanchez is top-drawer, there is no doubt about it, but will he win you the Premier League playing up front? No, no he won’t.
“I think they’re still short of a top-drawer centre-forward. If Giroud gets injured, you are talking about Sanchez coming in. They are going to struggle and it’s very rare a team wins anything with no more than one centre-forward.”
Arsenal finished second in the Premier League table last season, 10 points behind surprise champions Leicester City.
