Paul Merson questions Arsenal’s link to next transfer deal
Paul Merson questions why Arsenal did not make a move to sign Shkodran Mustafi earlier in the summer
Paul Merson believes that Arsenal’s reported interest in signing Shkodran Mustafi from Valencia would be viewed as a panic buy.
The Gunners are thought to be keen on luring the Germany international defender to The Emirates after Gabriel Paulista recently joined Per Mertesacker on the sidelines for the north London side due to injury.
It remains to be seen whether the north Londoners will be able to push through a deal in the coming days as they prepare for their Premier League opener against Liverpool on Sunday afternoon.
However, Merson has admitted that he cannot understand why Arsenal did not make an official bid to sign the defender earlier in the summer.
Speaking in an interview with Sky Sports, Merson said: “Why didn’t they buy him when the Euros had finished, if they fancied him that much? It feels as if it is a bit of a last resort.”
Arsenal finished in second place in the Premier League table last season, 10 points behind surprise champions Leicester City.
The Gunners have not won the top flight trophy since their famous unbeaten triumph in the 2003-04 season.
