Paul Parker believes Manchester United’s Daley Blind is easily a better defender than Arsenal captain Per Mertesacker.

The Netherlands international started in Jose Mourinho’s first side as United manager at the weekend after the Red Devils were 3-1 winners against Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium in their Premier League opener.

Blind impressed alongside Ivory Coast international Eric Bailly as the new United defender won the man of the match award following an assured performance for the back four.

The former Ajax defender was initially linked with a move away from Old Trafford following Mourinho’s appointment as Louis van Gaal’s successor.

However, former United man Parker believes Blind is a good defender, adding that he is “head and shoulders” better than Arsenal’s Mertesacker.

“Daley Blind has always impressed me. He hardly gives the ball away and as for his height – because we know there are a lot of very tall centre-backs in the Premier League – you could ask who would you have over him or Mertesacker? I’d have Blind all day long,” said Parker, speaking exclusively to 888sport.

Blind moved to United in a £16m deal from Eredivise giants Ajax in 2014 after impressing for Van Gaal’s Netherlands side at the World Cup in Brazil.
