Phil Thompson: Why I’m disappointed by this Liverpool transfer
Phil Thompson reveals his disappointment at seeing Joe Allen leave Liverpool in the summer transfer window
Phil Thompson has revealed his disappointment at Liverpool’s decision to sell Joe Allen to Stoke City in the summer transfer window.
The Wales international midfielder joined the Potters on a permanent deal after being deemed to be surplus to requirements at Anfield by new Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp.
Former Liverpool man Thompson felt that this season was the perfect time for Allen to prove himself at Anfield and could not hide his disappointment at seeing the Welshman leave Anfield.
Speaking on Sky Sports News HQ on Saturday afternoon, Thompson said: “I was really disappointed to see him leave Liverpool.
“I thought this was made for him, I thought this was his time. He had a terrific Euros and I thought that would persuade Jurgen Klopp to say ‘you’re going to stay at this football club.”
Liverpool finished in eighth place in the Premier League table in Klopp’s first season in charge at Anfield last term.
The Reds will focus on domestic affairs this season after they failed to qualify for European competition this term following their lowly finish in the top flight.
Liverpool reached the Europa League and League Cup finals in Klopp’s first season but failed to win either of the competitions.
