Ray Parlour: Arsene Wenger knows this is where Arsenal must strengthen
Ray Parlour explains why Arsenal need to sign a centre-half
Ray Parlour believes Arsene Wenger is aware that Arsenal need a new centre-half before the close of the summer transfer window.
The Gunners manager has been heavily linked with a move for Germany and Valencia defender Shkodran Mustafi in recent days as Wenger looks to bolster his defensive options.
The Frenchman signed Rob Holding in a deal from Bolton Wanderers earlier this summer and the 20-year-old has featured heavily in their pre-season campaign.
However, Parlour is unsure whether Wenger should rely on the inexperienced centre-half at the start of the season, urging the Arsenal boss to invest in another defender.
Asked if Wenger needs to sign a new centre-half, Parlour told Sky Sports News HQ: “Absolutely.”
He continued: “Rob Holding who has had a really good pre-season. He will be a real star for the future. But can you rely on a young lad for the start of the season?
“Arsene Wenger knows that’s the position he really has to strengthen.”
Wenger has been linked with a host of players in the summer transfer window this summer but the Arsenal manager has only signed Granit Xhaka, Takuma Asano and Holding thus far.
The Swiss midfielder is Arsenal’s marquee signing of the summer so far after completing a £33m switch to the Gunners from Bundesliga side Borussia Monchengladbach.
Arsenal start the new Premier League season with a home clash against Liverpool at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
