Ryan Giggs believes new Manchester United signing Zlatan Ibrahimovic is capable of turning a poor cross into a good cross after the centre-forward’s impressive Old Trafford debut on Friday night.

The 34-year-old striker broke the deadlock in the 34th minute with a thunderous header which beat England and Southampton goalkeeper Fraser Forster after Ibrahimovic rose above Portugal defender Jose Fonte.

The former AC Milan and Barcelona man doubled his goal tally in the second half from the penalty spot after Luke Shaw earned Jose Mourinho’s side a penalty shortly after half-time at Old Trafford.

Ibrahimovic has scored four goals in his last three competitive games for United after the veteran Swedish striker completed a free transfer from Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain last month.

Former United midfielder Giggs, who won 13 Premier League titles during his decorated career at Old Trafford, explained how Ibrahimovic can improve Jose Mourinho’s wide men.

“When I was playing and Becks was on the other wing, we didn’t have a target man to aim for,” Giggs told Sky Sports after United’s 2-0 win. “We had to shape the crosses or pull back.

“But now they’ve got someone [Ibra] who can make an average cross into a good cross. It is a brilliant header. It puts defenders under pressure.”
