Stan Collymore: Liverpool need to seriously strengthen this position
Stan Collymore is desperate for Liverpool to sign a left-back
Stan Collymore has urged Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp to sign a left-back before the close of the summer transfer window.
The Reds started with Alberto Moreno in the left-sided full-back position for their Premier League opener at The Emirates but the Spain international produced an erratic performance in a 4-3 victory over Arsenal.
Klopp reinstated James Milner for Saturday afternoon’s trip to promoted side Burnley but the England midfielder struggled out-of-position as Liverpool lost 2-0 to Sean Dyche’s men at Turf Moor.
The Reds manager has poured cold water on talk of Liverpool going out and signing a new left-back in the summer transfer window after having already made seven new signings.
But former Liverpool striker Collymore is adamant that Klopp needs to improve what has become a real problem position for the Merseyside outfit.
“Moreno. The boss knew he was a liability in the Europa League Final, so why play him and not discipline him PRE-MATCH against Arsenal as to stay home, defend properly and help his team?” Collymore wrote in his Boylesport column.
“Milner? I love the lad, but if your back up left back two games in is a workhorse midfielder, then as a manager, surely that’s a position that Liverpool needed to seriously look at in summer, way before now.”
Liverpool finished in eighth place in the Premier League table last season after Klopp replaced Brendan Rodgers at Anfield in October.
The Reds will make the trip to Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane on Saturday afternoon.
