Stan Collymore makes bold claim about Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool
Stan Collymore delivers his verdict on Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool side
Stan Collymore has likened Liverpool to Newcastle United in 1995/96 after a mixed start to the season under Jurgen Klopp.
The Reds were talked up as potential title contenders following a 4-3 victory over top-four rivals Arsenal in their Premier League opener at the Emirates Stadium.
However, Liverpool suffered a surprise 2-0 defeat by Burnley at Turf Moor on Saturday afternoon as Sam Vokes and Andre Gray netted before half-time.
The Reds have already conceded six times in two games after Liverpool finished with their worst defensive record in Premier League history last term.
The club’s former striker Collymore likened Klopp’s current Liverpool crop to Kevin Keegan’s inconsistent Newcastle side in the mid-1990s.
“Some progress at Liverpool, but they remind me of Newcastle 1995/96. Great going forward, all over the place going back,” Collymore wrote in his Boylesport column.
“As I and the Geordies know all too well, that won’t win you leagues, and in Klopp they have invested in a man to deliver that, not just a smiling “everything will be ok tomorrow” manager.”
Liverpool will make the trip to Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane in the early kick-off on Saturday afternoon.
The Reds haven’t won the top-flight crown since 1990 despite finishing in runners-up spot in 2009 and 2014.
The 18-time English champions signed seven players in the summer transfer window so far as Klopp looks to put his stamp on the Reds.
