Three players who can inspire Arsenal to Premier League title
Kieran Beckles picks three players who can inspire Arsene Wenger's Arsenal side to Premier League title glory next season
Mesut Ozil couldn’t have done a lot more last season in the Premier League than his six goals and 18 assists. However, the Germany international’s exploits weren’t enough to help the Gunners launch a sustained title challenge. It’s great having the World Cup winner’s creativity but Alexis Sanhez’s injuries and loss of form hampered Arsene Wenger, who was left to rely on erratic Olivier Giroud. The Chile international will hope to recreate his 2014/15 Premier League form. If Sanchez can contribute 20 or more goals to the Arsenal cause and Ozil continue to excel creatively, then the north Londoners should have a real shot.
Petr Cech proved his worth to Wenger over the course of the campaign with some outstanding performances. However, the Czech Republic shot-stopper will concede that there is still room for improvement. His mistake-ridden debut against West Ham wasn’t entirely in isolation – the 34-year-old had his off days. His experience will prove vital in the coming season as well as his calming effect on the Arsenal back four. If Wenger is going to end his 12-year wait for the Premier League title, Cech will have a big role to play.
Granit Xhaka is Arsenal’s marquee signing of the summer – barring an eyebrow-raising world-class purchase up front. The Switzerland international is expected to add some steel to Wenger’s midfield coupled with his technical ability. Likened to Tottenham Hotspur’s Dele Alli, Xhaka was the heartbeat of the Borussia Monchengladbach side. Wenger will be hoping that his £33m signing can prove similarly influential in the Arsenal side and emulate talismanic captains and midfielders Patrick Vieira and Cesc Fabregas.
