Three reasons Arsenal shouldn’t sign Mauro Icardi
Kieran Beckles outlines three reasons why Arsenal shouldn't sign Mauro Icardi this summer
Unspectacular goal record
Mauro Icardi has been one name regularly touted as an Arsenal target in the British media over the past couple of weeks. Arsene Wenger’s hunt for a striker continues after Jamie Vardy knocked back the north London side’s interest. Now, Arsenal are thought to be interested in the Argentina international but while his talent his obvious, Icardi isn’t an out-and-out goal-scorer. His 47 goals in 84 games is a very good return but it is worth remembering that his compatriot Gonzalo Higuain scored 71 times in the same time frame. In fact, Olivier Giroud scored eight more goals (in all competitions) last term.
This could be a stumbling block for Arsenal. Inter Milan have insisted their captain is not for sale but the forward is thought to have a price tag in the region of £50m. For that money, Arsenal could sign Romelu Lukaku – and what a signing he’d be for Wenger! While Icardi has impressed for the Nerazzurri in recent seasons, the 23-year-old hasn’t done enough to warrant what would be a club-record price tag, especially considering the experience Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil brought to the Arsenal following their big-money moves.
Bad boy image
Icardi is no stranger to off-field and on-field controversies. The South American married his ex-team-mate’s ex-wife in controversial circumstances and it is something which has followed Icardi. Such an image would stand out against Arsenal’s squeaky clean image. However, perhaps Wenger would be willing to overlook such concerns. After all, Arsenal did bid £40m and £1 for Luis Suarez after the Uruguayan had already bitten two opponents and been banned by the FA for racially abusing Patrice Evra.
