Three strikers Chelsea could turn to instead of Argentina star this summer
Kieran Beckles looks at three strikers Chelsea should target after Gonzalo Higuain's move to Juventus last week
Chelsea have been forced to shelve reported interest in Gonzalo Higuain after the Argentina striker completed a move to Juventus earlier this week. However, Antonio Conte shouldn’t give up hope of improving his Chelsea attacking line-up. Atletico Madrid are rumoured to be interested in re-signing Diego Costa and Chelsea should surely seize the opportunity to use the Spanish striker as a makeweight for a deal to sign Antoine Griezmann. The France international was one of the stars of Euro 2016 with a return of six goals in seven games. The Atletico star would inject energy into Conte’s side and Griezmann is still young at 25.
Juventus appear to be inextricably linked to Chelsea’s transfer fortunes this summer. The Old Lady sold Alvaro Morata back to Real Madrid earlier this month, which opened the door for the arrival of Higuain. Conte is thought to be an admirer of the Spain international although the 23-year-old arrived in Turin in 2014 following the Italian’s departure. With Eden Hazard being regularly linked with a move to The Bernabeu, Morata could be used as part of a deal which sees the Belgian leave Chelsea after a disappointing 2016/17 season.
Conte could always promote from within. Bertrand Traore was limited to sporadic game time last season under Jose Mourinho and Guus Hiddink. The Burkina Faso international has raw talent but it needs to be harnessed. Conte could be the ideal man to do that with his thorough approach to management.
