Wenger delivers latest Arsenal injury update after Man City win
Arsene Wenger delivers the latest update on Arsenal's injury setback involving Gabriel Paulista
Arsene Wenger has revealed that Arsenal are sweating on the fitness of Gabriel Paulista after the defender was carried off on a stretcher during the Gunners’ 3-2 pre-season win over Manchester City on Sunday night.
The Arsenal boss confirmed after the game that the Brazilian would travel back with the Gunners squad from Norway and will be assessed in the coming days.
News of Gabriel’s setback comes as an untimely blow for Arsenal, who already know they will start the season without Per Mertesacker due to a knee injury.
Wenger may be forced to dip into the transfer market for reinforcements in the coming days to look for defensive additions.
And the Gunners boss delivered the following update to the gathered media at his post-match news conference on Sunday night.
Wenger said: “We have not even made a diagnosis in the medical room with our doctors or physios yet. I can’t tell you more.
“He’s in pain. Let’s hope the pain is not a sign of bad news. The only thing we have to know now is how big the damage is with his ligament.
“He played the ball 100 per cent and I think he rolled his ankle, but I don’t know how it happened. It’s part of our game.”
Wenger added: “Yes [he will miss the Liverpool game]. We are very short [in defence].”
Arsenal will now turn their attentions towards their Premier League opener against Liverpool on Sunday afternoon at The Emirates.
