Wenger delivers latest Arsenal injury update ahead of Liverpool opener
Arsene Wenger confirms that Jack Wilshere will miss Arsenal's clash with Liverpool on Sunday afternoon
Arsene Wenger has confirmed that Jack Wilshere is likely to miss Arsenal’s Premier League opener on Sunday due to injury.
The England midfielder, who has been dogged by injury problems in recent seasons, suffered a minor setback during Arsenal’s pre-season preparations and although Wenger moved to play down fears over his fitness levels, the Frenchman revealed that Wilshere is likely to miss Sunday’s game at The Emirates.
The Arsenal boss also confirmed that, as expected, defender Gabriel Paulista will be out of action for around six to eight weeks after he suffered an ankle injury during the 3-2 win over Manchester City on Sunday.
That leaves Arsenal short in defence, as Per Mertesacker is already sidelined with a knee injury.
Speaking to Arsenal’s website in the build-up to Sunday’s game, Wenger said: “Jack is doing well, but he will be short for Sunday. He is back in training but will not be completely ready for Sunday.
“Gabriel has an ankle problem, and will be out for six to eight weeks. It is a bit better than we feared at the start.”
Arsenal – who have not won the title since 2004 – finished second in the Premier League last season and ended the campaign without a trophy.
