Andy Cole: Why Man United manager can get best out of Anthony Martial
The former Manchester United striker is convinced Jose Mourinho can restore Anthony Martial's confidence
Jose Mourinho can restore Anthony Martial’s confidence after a tough spell for the Manchester United striker, according to Andy Cole.
The France forward has struggled to find his best form at the start of the Premier League season despite Mourinho sticking with Martial ahead of England teenager Marcus Rashford.
The former Lyon man was out-of-sorts for France during their European championship campaign but the 20-year-old found the back of the net in les Bleus’ 3-1 win against Italy last week.
Martial failed to find the back of the net in United’s last Premier League trip as the France star’s replacement Rashford netted an added-time winner in a 1-0 victory over Hull City.
However, former United striker Cole believes Mourinho can get the best out of the £36m signing despite Martial’s fragile confidence over the past few months for club and country.
“I see it as an extension of the Euros. He played a game then got left out and didn’t feature after that and of course that’s going to dent your confidence,” said Cole, speaking exclusively to 888sport.
“He’s a young man and had a fantastic season last season with Manchester United but confidence is everything. He is too good a player not to turn that around and Mourinho will help Anthony get his confidence back. He has worked with players his age before.”
Cole added: “I’ll think he will be okay because all it takes is a goal and I’m not sitting here worried about him because he is far too good not to get out of the slump he’s in.”
Martial moved to United in a £36m deal from Ligue 1 side Monaco under Mourinho’s predecessor Louis van Gaal last summer.
The France international netted 17 times in 49 games in all competitions for United during his first season at Old Trafford.
