Keown makes plea to Mourinho ahead of Man United v Man City

Martin Keown wants both Pep Guardiola and Jose Mourinho to keep calm during Saturday's Manchester derby

Martin Keown has pleaded with both Pep Guardiola and Jose Mourinho to keep a lid on their heated rivalry when Manchester United host Manchester City on Saturday.

The Red Devils are preparing to welcome their bitter local rivals to Old Trafford as Mourinho and Guardiola do battle for the first time as managers in the Premier League.

And Keown is hoping that the focus will be on what is taking place on the pitch rather than the bench on Saturday lunchtime.

Writing in his column for The Daily Mail, Keown said: “This rivalry is fascinating, but I hope they can keep a lid on these duels.

“El Clasicos often got to fever-pitch stage when these two were in charge, with every decision questioned by the bench and the players on the pitch and stoppages every couple of minutes.

“They are both passionate managers and get their messages across to their players by creating a belief for the cause, which rubs off on the players.

“It gives them good direction but also gets them fired up to a point that the game would always be on the verge of boiling over.”
