Alan Shearer says Theo Walcott needs to hit double figures for two or three consecutive seasons before the England legend will describe the Arsenal forward as “a very good player”.

The England international scored twice in the first half of Arsenal’s 3-2 victory over Swansea City at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Walcott has scored five goals and has made two assists in eight Premier League appearances for the north London side so far this season.

The 27-year-old has also found the net twice in the Champions League after his brace in a 2-0 win against Basel last month.

However, former England and Newcastle United striker Shearer still isn’t convinced about Walcott ahead of their home clash against Ludogorets in the Champions League in north London on Wednesday night.

“We do have this discussion every year about Theo Walcott,” Shearer told BBC One’s Match Of The Day on Saturday night.

“He has only once hit double figures which isn’t good enough. If we continue to talk about him in the next two or three years to say he has scored so many goals and he has been brilliant then I’ll change my mind on him and say he is a very good player. At the minute, he’s a good player.”

Arsenal are in second place in the Premier League table but level on points with leaders Manchester City.
